A hot work permit checklist is used to verify that all required fire prevention and safety controls are in place before welding, cutting, grinding, and other hot work activities commence in industrial facilities and field locations.
To use this checklist, a hot work supervisor or permit issuer should verify all required safety controls before signing and issuing the hot work permit. This includes atmospheric testing in the work area and adjacent areas, verification that all flammable materials have been removed or protected, confirmation that fire watch personnel and equipment are in place, and communication of the permit conditions to all workers. The permit must be posted at the work location and remain active for the duration of the hot work. The fire watch must remain in place for at least 30 minutes after hot work is complete.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 requires a fire prevention and protection program for welding, cutting, and brazing operations. NFPA 51B Standard for Fire Prevention during Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work provides detailed requirements for hot work permit programs. In oil and gas, petrochemical, and other hazardous facilities, hot work in or near flammable atmospheres requires additional atmospheric monitoring and isolation controls. This checklist supports compliance with these requirements.
